Amalfi Coast Day 17

Today, the forecast was for rain and some thunder showers, so we decided to drive the Amalfi Coast.  It turned out that we had great weather and the thunder storms were this morning at 5:00 a.m., so our drive was great.

We left fairly early as we had heard that by afternoon it can get pretty crowded with tour buses and traffic.    We drove by Positano because we will be there for our last 2 night of our vacation before heading back into Rome to leave.

The drive is beautiful no doubt.  The roads are very windy and you are literally driving straight up these coastal mountains.  The railing on the cliff sides are, I think, about knee height.  I can’t even imagine driving up here on a bus.  As it was we saw them driving and it looks like they are just going to fall right over the cliff.  I couldn’t imagine me, being in the bus, while the leaning is taking place.

Our first stop was Amalfi, and it is a very cute, quaint little town.  We wandered around, went to the beach, picked up some rocks, dunked my hands in the Mediterranean Sea, and then moved on to Ravello.

Going to Ravello was just to take the drive.  It is a town perched on the side of this mountain.  The roads up were windy and very…very narrow.  We managed the drive up just fine, but on the way down, we had some very hairy experiences, which we have video of.

The skill of the tour bus drivers is amazing.  They negotiate these corners, with other buses coming from the opposite direction, on what we would have as only a single lane of traffic.  We are scrunched right up the edge of the rock railing, while the bus goes by, and seriously, we can touch it.  It is unbelievable really.  In our country, it would either have been a one way, or no buses allowed.

My thoughts on the Amalfi Coast are this.  It is a great drive to do, no doubt.  But we have to say that between the 2 coastal destinations we went…here and the Cinque Terre….we enjoyed the Cinque Terre much more.  It is less touristy.  The people seem more genuine, and there is less of them for sure.  There is also more to do that doesn’t involve shopping in stores that seem to repeat themselves every block or so.  But still a great place to see.  Although, you wouldn’t catch me here in any kind of high season.

We drove back and arrived in Sorrento early afternoon.  This was our last “to do” on our itinerary, of things to do.  I can’t believe that we are on the last few days of the trip, where we have nothing to do but relax.

The hotel we are at in Positano has a balcony with table and chairs and a sea view.  I am hoping that it makes for a wonderful end to our vacation.
