Our second day.

We woke up to the sounds of church bells and a men’s choir singing and for a minute I thought I was living the Sound of Music.  Not so, just the Vatican reminding us that we should attend a church service somewhere.  Luckily, we had a sermon slipped under our door in the night, so I thought it best to read it as we were going to be walking through Vatican square on our way to our next hotel.

The walk over to our new hotel was about 20 minutes or so, with a few stops to get out the GPS so we knew where we were going.  The hotel was more central to the sites we wanted to visit, and was cheaper than the previous.  It is a fantastic hotel, with a big front door to get into the little square.  The elevator was tiny, and we barely fit into it with our back packs, but it was fun.

We saw the Colesseum, with it’s Disneyesque que line, but we had bought a pass=to the fast pass, and skipped the queue.  Yahoo!   The bathroom had the longest wait for us–well me, and once you get in you realize that there is no toilet seat.  Not sure why.  But you have to do some pretty sweet manouveurs to go to the bathroom.

Since everything is so close, we also saw the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps.

One thing that has been a little stressful is finding somewhere to eat.  Going by the internet, and guidebooks, they all have so many rules about where you should or should not eat.  They say not to stop near any monument, or piazza as their food is not as great, go about 2-3 blocks away.  The problem with this is that, there is a monument or piazza around every corner, so just when you think you can start looking, you stumble across something else.  Last night we wandered around aimlessly hoping this most fabulous trattoria was going to jump out at us, until we were exhausted and very wine deprived, so we did the unthinkable.  We sat down at a restaurant that was right in the middle of some piazza and had a bottle of Chianti with lasagna and ravioli.  Whatever, it was delicious, and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Ragu!
