Rome Day 3

We had a reservation for the Vatican at 2:00, and thankfully we booked ahead online.  The wait to get in was at least 3 hours, I couldn’t believe that people were standing to get in for that long.  That alone is a pilgrimage.  The main reason for going was to see the Sistine Chapel.  Worth the visit for sure, but so was the rest of the museum.  It is amazing what people did in the name of religion.  Just painting on the wall.  Hard to believe.

While we were waiting for our reservation, we wandered the streets around the Vatican, and I popped into a “supermarket” to check out their groceries.  Cheaper than our food, a guy checked out with a total of 28 euros, and he bought all kinds of cheese and speciality meat that would be well over $100.  My best find was…..wine….at less than $3 a bottle.  Whoohoo!  I was a happy camper.  It was at that point that we decided to take out food from these self serve restaurants and eat back at the hotel.  Our lunch including wine was $10 euros….about $13.

Because we had walked our butts off yesterday, by the time we left the Vatican, we were exhausted and sore.  We took a break in front of a castle ruin for about 5 minutes, and it was not pretty getting up.  My hips hurt, my feet hurt.  Came back and had a nap, and set out again.

Tonight we went back to the Trevi Fountain, wandered around the streets and did some window shopping, had a lovely dinner at a little trattoria down a street….it jumped out at us….

We are watching Gladiator tonight, packing up.  Tomorrow is the train to Florence.
